Pattaya at a Glance Are you in a hurry? Don't want to read through all those pages of information on Pattaya? Then just read this one. We've summarized all you really need to know about Pattaya City in a nutshell. Of course, there are still links to all the details and the menu above, if you want to know more.
Is Pattaya For You? Old tree branch on sandy beachPattaya is of course, a beach destination, so if that's not what you're looking for, you might as well move on to Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Koh Samui Island. As beaches go, Pattaya's are far from the best that Thailand has to offer but still pretty fine! Pattaya's main attraction, besides the nightlife, is its nearness to Bangkok, less than two hours drive away. There are plenty of water sports on offer, as well as a number of other activities. You can find all of them in the section 'Sights & Attractions' and in our 'Visitor Guide'. For families in particular, there's Pattaya's reputation to consider. Pattaya has a rather blowzy reputation, with lots of a-go-go bars and some other naughty "attractions" with Sex everywhere on offer. That is changing bit by bit, and there are a lot of new family oriented places to keep children occupied, but you may want to keep this side of Pattaya in mind when deciding if Pattaya is the right beach destination for you.Creative Commons License photo credit: René Ehrhardt
When to go to Pattaya longtail boatsPattaya can be enjoyed at just about any time of year. However, if you're looking for a bit of nice sunshine and fine sand, you'd best avoid September and October, that's when the monsoon rains really starts to hit Pattaya hard. To avoid the big crowds, you might also want to avoid the long holiday weekends, when hoards of Thais from Bangkok often descend on Pattaya and all the tourists from Europe arrive. Creative Commons License photo credit: Mohd Saifulnazim Azman
How to Get to Pattaya Long tailed boatAbout the only practical way to get to Pattaya is to drive there from Bangkok. Buses are available from Bangkok's Eastern Bus Terminal, or you can arrange for a private transfer by car, bus or van. See the getting to Pattaya page for more info on this. Driving is most of the time the easier decision but you could also try to get there by boat, train, plane or even with your bike! Creative Commons License photo credit: IMP1
Where to Stay in Pattaya Railay Bay / Thailand, KrabiThere are two distinctly different parts to Pattaya, so your first decision when thinking about where to stay is the selection of location: Pattaya or Jomtien is on offer. Central Pattaya is home to several nice hotels and resorts and is where you'll find all the sexy nightlife, shops and many services. Jomtien, south of Pattaya, is more quiet, with a lot less of the shabbiness that Pattaya has become infamous for. Still, you will find some fine restaurants in Jomtien, as well as a more easygoing beach scene. See the Pattaya accommodations page and the Ex-pat page for more information on this. Creative Commons License photo credit: flydime
Getting Around in Pattaya Snorkel Paradise Similan Island, ThailandThere are a few metered taxis in Pattaya, but not too many. The most common mode of transport is the songtaew, a light pick-up truck or minibus with benches mounted along either side of its bed. These work like buses: You hop on the back of a truck going your way, and hop off when it passes close to your destination. You pay a flat fee of around 10 Baht (0.30 Euro) for trips within Pattaya, or 20 Baht for trips between Jomtien and Pattaya. We cover Tuk-Tuks on the transportation page but those are not seen very often. Creative Commons License photo credit: René Ehrhardt
What To See Palm tree at dawn, Patong beachPattaya is definitely a beach destination, so water sports are definitely at the top of the list of things to do. Pattaya is a relatively new city, so there isn't much in the way of cultural sights - Check out our Cultural Sights Page on Bangkok if you want to stop there first and then head down to Pattaya. Most of the attractions away from the water tend towards the fulsome, such as Mini Siam, a collection of small models of various cultural icons from around Thailand and beyond. Much more impressive is the massive attempt to create a new cultural icon in the form of the Sanctuary of Truth, just north of Pattaya city. Nevertheless there is plenty on offer, you can find all the info on our Activities & Sports page. Creative Commons License photo credit: René Ehrhardt
Pattaya Shopping Fire spinPattaya is the perfect destination in Thailand if you are looking for great markets, big-ass malls, souvenirs for your friends and family at home, boutiques .... and much more (besides Bangkok, of course). Probably because it attracts so many weekend holiday-makers from Bangkok, Pattaya has quite a few shopping centers. These offer a range of goods, from clothing to books, as well as a large number of restaurants to choose from. The grand dame of the malls is the Royal Garden Plaza, next to the Marriott Hotel in roughly the center of town. The mall has no department store, but it does have many shops, a rather posh food court, movie theaters and a branch of Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum. Creative Commons License photo credit: Gaetan Lee
Thai Currency Koh Nang Yuan, ThailandThe currency of Thailand is the "Baht" - sometimes spelled "Bath". One Baht is divisible into 100 Satangs. Major credit cards such as Visa and Master Card are accepted by hotels and large shops, but "hard cash" is the preferred tender almost everywhere, be it Baht, Dollar or Euro. Travelers checks are not widely accepted outside of hotels, so change them for money at a bank exchange, which you'll find in any and every tourist destination. Creative Commons License photo credit: ccdoh1
